Lake Ridge Elementary School
Welcome to Lake Ridge Elementary School
Lake Ridge Elementary School is a fully accredited school of 520 students in grades K-5. We're an eight-time Prince William County School of Excellence awardee. We are proud of our French Program and of having achieved AYP. We're a friendly community and we love our students!

FRENCH: Lake Ridge Elementary students are instructed in dynamic French classes, which are taught for twenty minutes, three times per week. Lake Ridge Elementary’s FLES program provides students with an introduction of French through a sequence of grades on a regular basis in which skill development in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture awareness are learned within the themes and topics of the mainstream curriculum content objects.

ESOL: E.S.O.L. stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. The E.S.O.L. program at Lake Ridge Elementary School is a center - based program that provides instruction for students from Lake Ridge Elementary and Springwoods Elementary who are second language learners. At the start of our 2002 - 2003 school year, Lake Ridge Elementary’s E.S.O.L. center services fifty – two students, which span across thirteen different languages and nineteen different nationalities.

GIFTED CENTER: Lake Ridge Elementary is also home of the regional gifted center. Students from other Lake Ridge corridor schools as well as our own, attend this center. Gifted students involved in the program attend the center once a week.

READING PROGRAM: The reading program at LRES is based on the PWC Language Arts curriculum and balanced literacy model. As a short-term intervention program, we have a Reading Recovery Program for 1st graders who are experiencing difficulty in reading and writing. It is a 1-1 tutoring for lowest achieving 1st graders and used as a supplement to good classroom teaching. The objective of Reading Recovery is to promote learning so students may catch up to their peers and close the achievement gap and continue to learn independently. To continue these same strategies in the classroom, many teachers (K-5) receive SPOT training. (Supporting the Practice of Reading and Writing Theory in the Classroom).

These strategies reinforce what was learned in Reading Recovery and support all children in their language arts development for student success. In addition to the intervention program, we also provide remediation for those students who need long term assistance in order to read on grade level. A team approach is taken with the intervention and remediation programs so the students are receiving double or more doses of reading at their level in order to make a difference in student performance.

SEVERE DISABILITIES PROGRAM:
This program consists of five students ages 6-8, with varying disabilities. Some students are in wheelchairs, while others are able to walk. Most of the students are not able to communicate like we do, however they do know some sign language and use what is known as the PECS ( picture exchange communication symbols). This program has been at Lake Ridge Elementary School since September, 1999, with Mrs. Graley and Mrs. White as teacher and teacher assistant.
ENRICHMENT & EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMS

Lake Ridge Elementary School offers a variety of enrichment programs for its students. Accelerated Reader, a computer based reading enrichment program, is widely used by our students. Last year to date our students have passed over 15,563 tests with an 80% or better score.

Strings, Chess Club, Student Council Association (SCA), Library Aides, Patrols, Morning Broadcast as well as a variety of scouting programs are supported.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Lake Ridge Elementary is fortunate to be located in a community that is actively involved in their children's learning. Our parents consistently support the school with all their resources. Many of our parents serve as tutors in their children's classrooms. PTO is our school’s parent/teacher support group. Parents also serve on the school’s Advisory Council.
