The Potomac Nationals, minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals, want to
team up with local schools to help promote reading through “Uncle Slam’s Reading
Program.” Nearly 2,000 students participated last year in the easy three-step program that
rewarded its participants with FREE tickets to a Potomac Nationals’ baseball game and
on-field recognition before the game. Here’s how it works:
FIRST BASE:
Uncle Slam and representatives from the Potomac Nationals front
office will come to your school and read a special version of
“Casey at Bat” during a school-wide assembly. All students who
participate will receive an official “Uncle Slam’s Reading
Program” bookmark.
SECOND BASE:
Students will then be asked to read a total of four
books over a six-week period and have their teacher or
parent sign their bookmark, certifying the books were
completed. The bookmarks can then be turned in to the
Potomac Nationals Ticket Office for two FREE tickets
to a designated Potomac Nationals game.
THIRD BASE:
Select your school’s designated “Reading Day” and
have all students attend the game that day. 2009
“Reading Days” include April 19th, May 1st, May 3rd,
and June 7th. All participants in “Uncle Slam’s
Reading Program” will be invited onto the field prior to
their designated game to take part in a parade around
the field honoring their commitment to reading.
